The vision for The Refuge at Freedom Ranch is to create a therapeutic environment for at-risk youth from the surrounding counties of Southwest Virginia by pairing them with horses and other farm animals. Our aim is to cultivate an environment of healing through the deep bond between the children and animals, allowing them to learn trust under the compassionate guidance of dedicated and trained mentors.
Our goal is not only to provide a safe place to find respite, but also to equip these youth with tools to break the generational cycle of addiction—teaching prevention while offering hope for recovery. Through this journey, we seek to nurture their faith in Jesus Christ while embracing a truly holistic approach to well-being. This includes education around healthy living, especially the impact of nourishing, balanced food on mental and emotional health—helping them build stronger bodies, clearer minds, and greater resilience.
Our long-term vision is to support any child who has the desire to participate in horsemanship competitions (particularly reined cow horse), and to explore trades within the horse, farming, and construction industries for future career opportunities (such as horse trainer, farrier, veterinarian, farmer, or fence builder, to name a few).
We have constructed a 120' x 240' training and competition arena on our property for the children to learn to ride and to compete. We will soon be constructing the barn to house the horses that will help to change the lives of the children who participate in the program.
We believe that the natural beauty at Freedom Ranch provides an ideal setting for finding peace and restoration for those in need.
